CREWS BATTLE TWO SIMULTANEOUS STRUCTURE FIRES
FIRES ON NELSON STREET, FIRST AVENUE REPORTED MONDAY
**********************************************
Spokane Fire Department crews responded to two simultaneous structure fires Monday morning. No injuries were reported in either incident.
The first occurred at 1923 N. Nelson St. and was reported by a passerby who noticed heavy smoke emanating from the residence at 5:21 a.m. As companies arrived, it was determined that heavy fire was located in the basement with extension to the first floor and attic of the single-story structure.
Early attempts were made to search for victims with the protection of hose lines. Due to the risk from the structural conditions, however, crews were ordered out and a defensive strategy was established.
The majority of occupants have been accounted for. Crews are still on scene attempting to salvage and search the remains of the heavily damaged and partially collapsed structure. Crews will likely remain at the scene for the majority of the day.
The second structure fire occurred at 2415 E. 1st Avenue at 7:27 a.m. On arrival, companies found a single-story duplex with heavy smoke and fire showing from a back bedroom. Companies from SFD and the Spokane Valley Fire Department forced entry into the house and searched both units for victims while attacking the fire.
The fire was confined to the attic and heavy damage to the rear of the house. Red Cross is assisting the families affected.
