No one injured by fires on opposite sides of city

NO ONE INJURED BY FIRES ON OPPOSITE SIDES OF CITY

HOME AND ANIMAL CLINC DAMAGED

Simultaneous unrelated structure fires on opposite sides of the city damaged a home and an animal clinic. No one was injured in either of the Friday afternoon incidents.

 

Firefighters responded to the first fire just after 1 pm. The fire at the Animal Clinic of Spokane in the 6300 block of north Wall was burning inside a ventilation chase. About an hour later, a homeowner in the 1000 block of east 38^th Avenue reported smoke coming from the detached garage outside the home. Both fires were quickly extinguished before damage could spread.

 

Despite intense smoke and flames threatening adjacent homes, firefighters successfully confined the fire on 38^th Avenue to the garage.  The cause of the fire remains under investigation. The homeowners and pets were safe and the fire was extinguished in just 30 minutes, and no injuries were reported.

 

Across town at the animal clinic, firefighters successfully confined the fire to the ventilation system to limit damage. Crews had to remove a large area of roofing to stop the fire.

 

The incident utilized the benefits of Automatic Aid program that delivered a total of five engines, two truck companies and a command team of chief officers within minutes of dispatch. The Automatic Aid Program utilizes the closest resources, regardless of jurisdiction. The outcome of Automatic Aid is the improvement of citizen and firefighter safety.

Garage, shed and chicken coup damaged by fire

GARAGE, SHED AND CHICKEN COUP DAMAGED BY FIRE

NO ONE INJURED; CAUSE IS STILL BEING DETERMINED

Fire that engulfed a backyard shed and chicken coup spread to a two-car garage in northeast Spokane, but firefighters were able to stop it before it extended inside the garage. No one was injured and damage was estimated at $7,000.

 

Firefighters were called to a home at 3517 E. Courtland Ave. about 3:30 pm on Thursday. A total of 22 firefighters worked to contain the fire to the chicken coup and exterior of the nearby garage. Avista Utilities de-energize an electrical line that had fallen as a result of the fire.
 
The cause of the fire is currently under investigation by members of the Spokane Fire Department SIU.

Fire extensively damages auto body shop

CAUSE IS STILL BEING INVESTIGATED

A fire that caused extensive damage to an auto body repair shop is being investigated by Spokane Fire Department investigators. No one was injured by the Thursday night fire, but damage was estimated at $200,000.

Firefighters from Station 18 were out of their station when they noticed a large column of smoke coming from Cincinnati and Rosewood about 8:37 pm. They quickly determined the source was a large metal building that houses an auto body repair shop.

 

Flames and smoke were showing from the west and north sides of the structure. A full fire alarm response was dispatched and a second alarm sounded. The fire was brought under control within 40 minutes.

 

Crews from Fire District 9 assisted in the fire attack and fire crews from Fire District 1 and District 8 assisted with city coverage. A total of 45 firefighters responded to the fire. The building was not occupied at the time of the fire.

 

Fire damage was confined to the walls and ceilings of the west end of the metal building with smoke damage throughout the structure. Several vehicles inside the building sustained heat and smoke damage.

Cause of north side fire under investigation

The Spokane Fire Department is investigating the cause of an afternoon fire that caused extensive damage to a north side home.  No one was injured and damage was estimated at $30,000.

A passerby was spraying water from a garden hose onto the fire when firefighters arrived at the home 4823 N. Washington St. a little after 12:35 pm. Smoke and flames were coming from the front of the house.
 
Firefighters quickly extinguished the fire and confined fire damage to the front room. The remainder of the house suffered extensive smoke damage.

Fire severely damages north side home

FAMILY AVOIDS INJURY, BEING ASSISTED BY RED CROSS

​An early morning house fire displaced a north Spokane family, who escaped without injury.

 

Firefighters were called to 4714 N Stevens St at 6:29 am. The first-arriving units found a fire burning in a small, 700-square-foot, single-family residence. The occupants were in the front yard and reported everyone was out.

 

Several units extinguished the fire while others ensured the fire didn't spread to nearby structures. The fire extensively damaged to the exterior and interior of the home.      

 

Damage was estimated at $50,000. The cause of the fire is under investigation. The displaced family is being assisted by Red Cross.

Investigators trying to determine cause of fire

VACANT, BOARDED UP NORTHEAST SPOKANE HOME DAMAGED

​Spokane fire investigators are trying to determine what caused a fire that damaged a vacant and boarded up home in northeast Spokane.

 

Firefighters were called to the home at the intersection of Euclid and Altamont just after 11 pm Wednesday. First arriving units found a vacant, boarded up house with fire on the exterior in the back.

 

The fire quickly extended up the exterior wall and into the interior of the house. Firefighters were hampered by boarded up windows and secured doors. While several crews attacked the fire, others searched the structure for potential victims. None were found.

 

The fire caused extensive damage to the back and the roof of the structure. Damage was estimated at $30,000. The cause is currently under investigation by the Special Investigations Unit.

Crews battle two simultaneous structure fires

FIRES ON NELSON STREET, FIRST AVENUE REPORTED MONDAY

​Spokane Fire Department crews responded to two simultaneous structure fires Monday morning. No injuries were reported in either incident.

 

The first occurred at 1923 N. Nelson St. and was reported by a passerby who noticed heavy smoke emanating from the residence at 5:21 a.m.  As companies arrived, it was determined that heavy fire was located in the basement with extension to the first floor and attic of the single-story structure. 

 

Early attempts were made to search for victims with the protection of hose lines. Due to the risk from the structural conditions, however, crews were ordered out and a defensive strategy was established. 

 

The majority of occupants have been accounted for. Crews are still on scene attempting to salvage and search the remains of the heavily damaged and partially collapsed structure. Crews will likely remain at the scene for the majority of the day.

 

The second structure fire occurred at 2415 E. 1^st Avenue at 7:27 a.m. On arrival, companies found a single-story duplex with heavy smoke and fire showing from a back bedroom. Companies from SFD and the Spokane Valley Fire Department forced entry into the house and searched both units for victims while attacking the fire.

 

The fire was confined to the attic and heavy damage to the rear of the house. Red Cross is assisting the families affected.

Electrical problem may be cause of fire

​Electrical causes are being investigated as the source of a fire that started in the basement of a north Spokane home late Friday. Both occupants of the home were uninjured.

 

Firefighters arrived about 10:20 pm to find a single-family, one-story house full of smoke. The fire burning in the walls and ceiling in the basement was quickly extinguished.

All utilities to the house had to be turned off and smoke damage extended throughout the home at 1912 E. Dalke. Fellow church members were going to provide lodging for the residents.

 

Damage was estimated at $60,000.

HOUSE FIRE DAMAGES HOME'S BASEMENT

The Spokane Fire Department is reminding people to check and install working smoke detectors after a family of six escaped an early morning fire in the basement of their home with no injuries.

 

​Firefighters were called to a home at 4240 East Central about 4 am today with heavy smoke showing from the windows and eaves of a single-story, wood framed structure. The fire was burning in the basement, and firefighters extinguished it within 30 minutes.

 

Two adults and four children made it safely out of the home and are being assisted by the local chapter of the American Red Cross. No working smoke detectors were found in the home and two of the young children were sleeping downstairs when the fire started.

 

Cause of the fire is under investigation. Damage was estimated at $40,000. Fire damage was confined to the basement with smoke damage throughout the home.
