NARRATIVE: When you turn back your clocks 1 hour this weekend with the end of Daylight Savings Time, Spokane Fire Department urges you to take the time to also check on the condition of your smoke detectors.
Check the label on the back of your smoke detectors to find their exact date of manufacture. If the detectors are more than 10 years old, replace them this weekend. Also check to see whether you have IONIZATION or PHOTOELECTRIC detectors in your home. It is best to protect your home with both types of detectors because ionization respond up to 55 seconds faster in a flaming type of fire but photoelectric respond up to 40 minutes faster in a slow burning, smoldering type of fire. In some cases, the ionization detector that sounds a false alarm with cooking may not sound any alarm in a smoldering fire. You can also upgrade your detectors to dual sensor photo-ion detectors which have both types of protection built into them.
If your detectors have alkaline batteries, this is the weekend to put new batteries in them. It is wise to keep some extra 9-volt batteries on hand in the event that your detector starts to "chirp" in the middle of the night. Never go to sleep without the protection of working smoke detectors!
This weekend, don't forget to change your clock AND to check your smoke detectors!
