DATE OF INCIDENT: 7/28/2010
INCIDENT TYPE: Wildland Fire
INCIDENT ADDRESS: 3500 West Indian Trail
CITY: Spokane
STATE: WA
ZIP: 99208

NARRATIVE: On Wednesday, July 28, 2010 at 3:53 PM, 2 Companies of Spokane Firefighters, two Structural Engines and two Type 6 Brush Engines under the direction of Battalion Chiefs Fielder and Donahoe responded to a reported brush fire in the area of 3700 West Indian Trail Road.

Firefighters arrived to find a column of smoke and 1/2 acres of light to medium brush burning. The incident started alongside the steep hills near G Street and Excell.

Although the fire was slow moving, command teams quickly assessed the need for additional resources including four additional Type 1 Structural Engines, two DNR Engines and command staff as the ground crews were unable to reach the bulk of the flames due to steep terrain. As more companies were called into action, additional personnel were strategically placed, halting the fire from its advance.

With relatively slow wind speeds being 15 mph, a relative humidity of 19%, and the temperature at 84 degrees, firefighters were able to knock down the flames in less than 1 hour. Due to the impeding storm approaching at 5:30PM all assigned crews remained in place while the 30MPH wind gusts passed over the fire. The fire was completely extinguished with no threats to civilian or any structures.

PROBABLE CAUSE: The cause is under investigation.
DAMAGE EXTENT: Thanks to the quick work of all the crews at the scene, only 1 acre was consumed by this blaze. Happily the firie did not reach the timbered land which stood between the fire and hundreds of homes on 5-mile road. There were no injuries to civilians or firefighters on this incident.

INCIDENT TYPE: Information
INCIDENT ADDRESS: 44 W Riverside

NARRATIVE: With the arrival of Summer temperatures in Spokane (finally), the Spokane Fire Department suggests that you:

-Learn the risks of hot weather.
-Prepare your household, pets and workplace.
-Plan to get relief from and avoid the effects of heat.

The best ways to remain protected from the ill effects of heat are to dress appropriately, stay indoors, refrain from strenuous work or exercise during the hottest part of the day - and stay hydrated.

Plan in advance to wear loose, lightweight and light-colored clothing that covers as much of your skin as practical, and a well-ventilated hat with a wide brim. Stay in the shade whenever possible.

Water is usually the best liquid to drink during hot weather. If you have a pre-existing medical condition or are under a doctor's care, consult with a Physician to determine your best plan for liquid intake.

Drinks with alcohol or caffeine can make the heat's effects on your body worse. Avoid salt tablets unless directed by a doctor (or a super triathlete like our Division Chief Art Nichols) and plan on eating light, healthy meals.

Symptoms of dehydration and heat illness may not be easily recognized, but often include fatigue, nausea, headache and vomiting. Drink before you become thirsty and rest before you become tired. If you feel ill, tell someone immediately.

Many heat emergencies occur to people who are exercising, working or staying alone. We suggest you use a buddy system, and also check on elderly, disabled or at-risk neighbors on a regular basis.

If your home does not have air conditioning, consider a cool place to visit or stay during the hottest part of the day. libraries, theaters, shopping malls and community facilities such as Senior Citizen Centers and park facilities may provide an air-conditioned refuge.

Pets, horses, and livestock are also susceptible to hot weather. See that the special needs of your animals are met, including copious shade and plenty of cool water.

In fact, now is a great time to examine your daily activities and discuss hot weather safety with your family, neighbors, co-workers and Physician. If you suspect someone is experiencing a medical emergency as a result of extreme heat exposure, call 9-1-1.

Firefighters will be keeping a close eye on local weather trends, including fire weather. You can help them by remaining aware of the dangers of hot weather, and keeping your home, neighborhood and workplace safe until cooler temperatures prevail.

NARRATIVE: During hot weather - and throughout the year, the Spokane Fire Department asks you to consider some important safety tips for vehicles and children.

We need your help to make sure that no child dies needlessly by being left alone in a hot vehicle.

-Always put something you'll need - such as your phone, handbag, a sunshade, lunch or briefcase on the floor in the back seat. This will make you open the back door of your vehicle every time you reach a destination. This way, making sure no child is left behind becomes a habit. Safety experts call this the 'Look...Then Lock' campaign.

-Keep a large teddy bear in the child's car seat when it's not occupied. When the child is placed in the seat, put the teddy bear in the front passenger seat. It's a great visual reminder that anytime the teddy bear is up front, a child is secured in a child safety seat behind you!

-Make arrangements with your child's day care center or babysitter that you will always call them when your child will not be there on a particular day as scheduled. This is not only common courtesy, but makes sure everyone involved in the care of your child is informed of their whereabouts. Ask these caregivers to always phone you if your child doesn't show up when expected.

-If you see a child (dependent adult or pet) alone in a hot vehicle, get involved. If they are hot or seem sick, get them out as quickly and safely as possible. Call 9-1-1 or your local emergency number for assistance as necessary.

-Never leave your car keys where children can access them, and always make sure your car is locked so that children cannot get in without adult supervision.

-Do not underestimate a child's capabilities. Teach your children about the dangers of a car, especially the car trunk. Most children can differentiate between a tool and a toy. Make certain they know that a car is not a toy!

NARRATIVE: On Tuesday July 13th, 2010 at 2:14 A.M. the Spokane Fire Department responded 23 firefighters with 4 engine companies, 2 ladder companies a rescue unit and 2 battalion chiefs to a motor home fire in an alley behind 1206 E. Broad. Initially, one company was sent on this alarm but the alarm was immediately upgraded after the crew discovered a fully involved motor home with flame impingement on a nearby church and a power line that had severed and dropped to the ground. Crews were concerned that the fire had extended to the interior of the church via a gable vent to the attic and through the flammable exterior vinyl siding. A ladder crew was sent to the interior of the church to see if any of the fire had indeed extended. At the same time, engine crews were busy with containing the fire in the motor home by using their preconnected hose lines. The fire was successfully knocked down after 10 minutes and the spread of the fire was limited to the exterior of the church and as a result of this, the interior of the church was spared. There were no injuries to firefighters or civilians. At this time, the cause is under investigation by the Spokane Fire Department Special Investigation Unit. The motor home was a total loss.

DATE OF INCIDENT: 7/12/2010
INCIDENT TYPE: Wildland Fire
INCIDENT ADDRESS: Beacon Hill Update
CITY: Spokane
STATE: WA
ZIP: 99208

NARRATIVE: On Monday July 12, 2010 at 3:12PM, two Companies of Spokane Firefighters were dispatched to a small brush fire located on Beacon Hill. While enroute, the alarm was upgraded due to the weather conditions and smoke column visible from Station 15. The upgraded response eventually included 4 Structural Engines, 4 Brush Engines, District 9 Dozer and a Rehab Group, under the direction of Battalion Chiefs Brown and Moline along with District 9 Deputy Chief Cates and DNR Warden Lewis.

Firefighters arrived to find 3-acres of light to medium brush burning quickly uphill being complicated by 30-50 mph wind gusts. With the assistance of District 9 and DNR resources, firefighters swiftly anchored the flames as the fire spread uphill into timber. A well coordinated ground assault from all companies assigned kept the fire from burning out of control, but not before the fire had charred 5-acres of land. Air resources were unavailable due to the high winds and limited visibility.

The swift arrival of SFD resources, combined the efforts and resources of our neighboring agencies, prevented any homes and/or utilities from being damaged. There were no injuries to civilians or firefighters.

PROBABLE CAUSE: The cause is under investigation.
DAMAGE EXTENT: No structures were damaged. Firefighters will be on scene throughout the night patrolling the fire.

NARRATIVE: With their sensitive hearing, many household pets become terrified by fireworks.

In Spokane, it's not uncommon this time of year for firefighters to deal with persons bitten or injured by skittish animals or traffic collisions caused by wayward dogs, cats and horses.

While we encourage attendance at the professional fireworks show downtown, it is a good idea to leave your four-legged friends safe at home, ideally with someone to watch over them.

In fact, now would be a great time to prepare your residence to safely harbor your pet from the frightful sights and sounds that may be associated with 4th of July celebrations.

First, make sure your pets are wearing proper identification. If your pet does run away during the exploding noise of a fireworks display, you will have a better chance of recovering the animal if it is wearing an ID tag.

Secondly, contact your veterinarian now for professional advice or assistance in preparing animals for the noisy days to come. For household pets, an otherwise quiet and well-secured room with television or radio playing at normal volume may be just what the doctor orders.

Lastly, take a photograph of your pet and place the telephone number of your veterinarian in your cell phone. In the event of an escaped animal or crisis, you can contact them promptly for guidance.

Should you experience an emergency that endangers human life or property and demands immediate attention, your Police or Fire Department may be contacted via 9-1-1.

Please join us in making sure that every member of your household celebrates safely!
