ISSUING OFFICER: AC Brian Schaeffer
DATE OF INCIDENT: 11/24/2010
INCIDENT TYPE: Special Situation
INCIDENT ADDRESS: 4327 North Ash
CITY: Spokane
STATE: WA
ZIP: 99208

NARRATIVE: On Thursday, November 24th, 2010 at 8:53 AM, 2 Paramedic Engine Companies of Spokane Firefighters, 4 AMR Ambulances, 1 EMS Captain under the direction of Battalion Chiefs Donahoe and Moline responded to a
Multi Patient Medical Incident at 4327 North Ash at Shadle Park High School.

Firefighters quickly responded to the school's office area for a possible overdose, where they found five students that became ill after clandestinely smoking what was described as "spice." The "spice"
substance is routinely found to be a form of synthetic cannabis and considered a chemical product which mimics the effects of cannabis. The chemicals used in the production of "spice" and similar products are
untested and their safety for humans is unknown.

The five male students, ranging from 16-18 years-old and all 11th graders, were in the School's Office complaining predominately of decreased levels of consciousness and other serious symptoms. Spokane Firefighter Paramedics evaluated and treated the students and determined that one of the patients was critical which necessitated emergent transport to Sacred Heart. Two of the four remaining patients were transported to Sacred Heart and a third to Holy Family. One refused transportation.

We are glad to report that all were in good condition at the time of this release. Exactly what was ingested and if it had an illegal substance in it is was not determined on scene.
