South Battalion Marine Incident

Narrative:
On Friday, July 29, at 5:12 PM, the Spokane Fire Dept dispatched 3 Engines, 1 Senior Ladder, 2 Marine Rescue Units, 2 Battalion Chiefs, and 1 Deputy Chief to a report of a person in the Spokane River under the Sandifur Bridge. First arriving SL4 interviewed the calling party and based on their report was able to locate a body in the river directly under the bridge next to one of the bridge supports. The body was entangled with a a log in a particularly treacherous and fast moving section of the river. A unified command was established with the SFD, SPD Major Crimes Unit, and the Sheriff's Dive Team and a recovery plan was formulated. A joint crew consisting of SFD Marine Unit and Sheriff's Dive Team members was able to approach the body by boat and successfully extricate the body. There were no injuries to team members during this very difficult and technically challenging extrication.
