NARRATIVE: June 14-20, 2009 has been recognized by the Nation's Fire Service as Fire/EMS Safety, Health and Survival Week. This year's theme reflects the need for improved firefighter responsibility and accountability while focusing on developing a strong safety culture.
This Thursday will mark the second anniversary of the quick-moving fire that killed nine Firefighters in Charleston, SC at the Sofa Super Store. In recognition of the tragedy and the correlating theme of this year's Survival Week; Spokane Firefighters will be visiting the majority of furniture stores throughout the City to review floor plans, assess potential risks and discuss strategies for fighting fires in these businesses. The goal is to better familiarize themselves with possible dangers of these "big box" businesses and identify tactical steps that can be taken by firefighters to prevent similar disasters as the one in Charleston.
Fire Companies when not committed to emergency incidents or participating in formal training may be seen at these businesses throughout the week. Ladder Companies may be seen extending their ladders or working on the exterior of the buildings, however during their time at the businesses they are remaining in-service available for responses.
Feel free to call me if you have any questions about this effort.
