NARRATIVE: On Wednesday, July 28, 2010 at 3:53 PM, 2 Companies of Spokane Firefighters, two Structural Engines and two Type 6 Brush Engines under the direction of Battalion Chiefs Fielder and Donahoe responded to a reported brush fire in the area of 3700 West Indian Trail Road.
Firefighters arrived to find a column of smoke and 1/2 acres of light to medium brush burning. The incident started alongside the steep hills near G Street and Excell.
Although the fire was slow moving, command teams quickly assessed the need for additional resources including four additional Type 1 Structural Engines, two DNR Engines and command staff as the ground crews were unable to reach the bulk of the flames due to steep terrain. As more companies were called into action, additional personnel were strategically placed, halting the fire from its advance.
With relatively slow wind speeds being 15 mph, a relative humidity of 19%, and the temperature at 84 degrees, firefighters were able to knock down the flames in less than 1 hour. Due to the impeding storm approaching at 5:30PM all assigned crews remained in place while the 30MPH wind gusts passed over the fire. The fire was completely extinguished with no threats to civilian or any structures.
PROBABLE CAUSE: The cause is under investigation.
DAMAGE EXTENT: Thanks to the quick work of all the crews at the scene, only 1 acre was consumed by this blaze. Happily the firie did not reach the timbered land which stood between the fire and hundreds of homes on 5-mile road. There were no injuries to civilians or firefighters on this incident.
