NARRATIVE: ON the morning of July 16th at 0310 hrs the city of Spokane Fire department responded to 2008 West 9th Ave for a reported apartment fire. When fire crews from Station 4 arrived they reported flames and smoke showing from the 2nd floor, this incident was upgraded to a working fire.
A search of the 2nd and 3rd floors was conducted immediately Hose lines were stretched to the 2nd and 3rd floors for fire attack. Crews were sent to the roof to provide ventilation this is done by cutting holes to release the hot smoke and gases, this aids the firefighting on the floors below.
The fire was knocked down and brought under control in about 30 minutes. Overhaul and final extinguishment took about 2 hours
Damage to the 6 apartments was heavy making it impossible for 6 tenants to stay. Red Cross was requested to help those that were displaced,
The cause of this fire was determined to be smoker/accidental.
No injuries were reported. A total of 27 firefighters responded on 9 fire apparatus along with 2 commands personnel.

PROBABLE CAUSE: Smoker / accidental
DAMAGE EXTENT: 2nd and 3rd floors total loss, water damage to the main floor
DOLLAR LOSS: 80,000.00
