Division Street Commercial Gas Leak

Narrative:
On September 30th 2011 at 12:48 pm the Spokane Fire Dept responded two Battalion Chiefs, three Senior Ladders, four Engine Companies and one Heavy Rescue to reports of a ruptured commercial natural gas line on Riverside Avenue just east of Division. The Hazardous Materials Team and the Response Chief from Station 1 staged their apparatus just east of their Station on Riverside. The Hazmat team reported natural gas drifting through traffic on Division Street. Division Street was immediately shut down from Sprague to Main for approximately 45 minutes. Fire Companies were assigned to monitor the surrounding buildings for Natural Gas and evacuation. Other Companies secured a water supply and stretched a hose lead to protect the Avista worker while he successfully shut down the gas valve in the street. There were no injuries reported to civilians or Firefighters. The neighboring businesses are back to normal operations with traffic flow restored on Division.

Cause:
A construction crew doing road work on East Riverside severed the gas line while operating a backhoe.

Damage:
Gas Line only.
