BNSF Locomotive Engine Fire
Incident #: 2011039205 Date of Incident: 9/26/2011 Issuing Officer: AC Schaeffer
Narrative:
At 10:09AM, two companies of Spokane Firefighters (two Engines) were dispatched with the South Battalion Chief to multiple reports of a BNSF Locomotive engine on fire. Initial 911 reports indicated the train was moving quickly and traveling from the East side of Spokane following the normal route through the City eventually stopping near "Sunset Junction" located at Inland Empire Way and Sunset Boulevard. According to BNSF representatives, the locomotive engine just behind the train's front engine was on fire. The train's crew moved the train to a less populated area and investigated the problem. The fire was determined to be in the diesel engine's injectors and limited to that immediate area (however resulting in dark smoke). The crew shut the engine down and extinguished the fire easily with portable extinguishers. After the situation was determined to be safe, the train continued on its route. Any additional information regarding this incident will only come from the BNSF Intermodal Facility.
Cause:
The incident is under investigation. BNSF is partnering with the SIU to determine the fire's cause.
Damage:
Damage is limited to the mechanical area of the train engine and reportedly minor and repairable.
